If it is a beauty contest, Bangalore has always had some say in it, especially in the recent years.
And it is the same story this year again. Sara Corner is a familiar face to theatergoers. Now the
whole country knows her as well. She was recently crowned Femina Miss India World and she is getting
ready to capture the entire world. Coming as she does from a family of achievers, it was but inevitable
that she had some achievement of her own.
Sara is one of those girls who stand out in whatever they do, from a very young age. She was the Head
girl in school, a good student and athlete. Competing in beauty pageants and sporting events has been
a part of her life for years. She is a state level high jumper too. She's in her final year BA at
Christ College, with history, psychology, economics and political science as her subjects.
For some time Sara was known more because of her mother, theatre person and singer Priscilla Corner.
She is now used to both her children, Sara and Robin Junior, taking part in competitions.
``I knew that either way, Sara would be a winner. Whether she won anything or not, I knew that she
would emerge a winner as a person. We are all so happy for her, she's wanted it so much, it's been
so much a part of her dream,'' says her proud mother.
So what is the reason for Sara's phenomenal success? Most people attribute it to her determination but
her mother knows better, who feels the real reason for her success is the fact that she is the same
person on stage as she is at home. ``There is no difference and so there are no two persons. The judges
felt that Sara had both, looks as well as intelligence and wit,'' she says.
The entire public glare must be too much for a girl so young, so how does she take it all? Through
relaxing by doing needlework and reading a lot, particularly autobiographies. What are her likes?
Here's what: She is most comfortable in a pair of jeans, preferably navy blue and a casual T-shirt
tucked in, a pair of comfortable boots. On the other hand if it were a wedding, she would prefer
an elaborate sari or a ghagra. But if it were an occasion for western formals, long pencil
skirts, paired with stilettos or platforms, a jacket or a drape - in some dark colour, black or
deep red - in brocade would be what you would see her in. But she has a particular weakness for
a nice chiffon sari with a well-cut cholito go with it, which is sensuous and really beautiful.
But Sara is not just all looks and beauty. There are some issues, which touch her very deeply, like
all the suffering after the recent earthquake in Gujarat. She wants to go to every school and request
each student to donate one rupee. She feels that every one of us is a part of the human race and
each one has to do something to make a difference to support the common man.
Apart from trying to raise funds for Gujarat victims, Sara has some important things on her agenda
for the moment. For starters the Miss World pageant for which she is preparing with everything she has got.
On her future plans, she is enthusiastic about modeling and films but is also realistic enough to
realise that they are both short lived careers, so she would like to run a travel agency probably,
though it is all very fluid at the moment.
She is also very particular about the kind of films she wants to do. ``Love triangles are out for me.
At the same time nothing controversial like, say Fire. The films I would love to do will have to move
me and hit me. They have to be very close to reality. If I don't get these kind of films I will not
do any'' she says with confidence.
However, despite her achievements she is the kind of person who seems to have a sensible head on her
shoulder. She is ecstatic about her crown, but realises that it is the outcome of hard work. ``I have
really worked very hard to get all that I have achieved. This is a ready platform for me to go ahead
and achieve more.''
She has done Bangaloreans proud, so it is only fair that Bangaloreans wish her all the best in her endeavors.
Go for it girl, we are behind you!!
