The Week That Was

IT department swoops down in Bangalore
Anything happening in the country, and Bangalore has to be involved. As the cricket match fixing controversy rages all over the country, a massive team of  over 75 officials of the Income Tax swooped down and raided former Indian cricket captain Mohd Azharuddin's wife Sangeeta Bijlani's house in the city.

The operation was supposed to be hush hush but media persons did land up there. However they were not let in on anything and the department officials carted away everything of consequence in cardboard boxes. The officials also raided a close confidant of hers Suresh Jain owner of The Dominion on Bellary Road.  Indications are that more raids and investigations are on the anvil.

Lakhs of cricket loving fans across the country will only be hoping that the controversy comes to a quick end and restore their faith in the game, because ever since the controversy broke that faith has taken a severe beating.

Lara Dutta charms Bangaloreans
It was a homecoming laced with emotion and fun. Miss Universe Lara Dutta was greeted by delirious fans and crowds when she visited the city in which she had grown up till recently. The motorcade designed to introduce her to people was a big hit and people thronged all along the route to cheer and wish her luck. Hundreds also queued up for her autograph.

At an earlier meet with the media, she also answered questions candidly indicating that she was no flash in the pan and that she was not just beauty but had brains as well. Bangalore is  certainly proud of her, but is now looking forward to the next beauty considering that most of them have some connection to the city.

Shakespeare is born in the prison
Prisons and prisoners are usually looked down upon, or looked at with lot of suspicion, even fear sometimes. But last week inmates of Bangalore Central Jail showed that they are just as human as anyone else and capable too of anything, including dramatising the most famous playwrights of them all. Last week they staged the Kannada version of William Shakespeare's dramatic play Julius Ceaser for a select audience. That the  rendition of play let the audience breathless and appreciative of the efforts is an indication of what they are capable of achieving. It could also signal a new chapter in prison reforms. Only the government should be willing.

Bangaloreans have to wait a little longer for good roads
Just when Bangaloreans were heaving a sigh of relief, the BCC has indicated that it was unable to keep its deadline of June for completion of roads. Instead, now they will be ready by December. But the saving grace is that citizens are  no longer so concerned probably because many of the roads are already complete and what has been done is decent enough that vehicles don't go bump-bump over them.

IT industry on a high again
It was a week when the Information Technology sector went on a high again. Chief minister S.M. Krishna made a visit to Electronics City and especially to Infosys, the most promising example of success in recent times. Mr Krishna also launched Tejas Technologies Limited, an optic fibre networking company. What is important about this is that it is headed by Gururaj `Desh' Deshpande and is peopled with young and enthusiastic people. Only goes to show that Bangalore continues to be in the forefront of the IT revolution.
