King Ceasar Augustus was ruling Rome. To collect the new taxes he ordered all the people to go to their place of Birth to get their names registered. Mary the mother of Jesus was engaged to Joseph who was from the place called Bethlehem. Mary who was not yet married to Joseph, still virgin was blessed by a Holy Spirit with the pregnancy. Joseph took Mary who was carrying to Bethlehem on a Donkey. They did not find a place for stay as all the inns were full. Mary was in labour. The inn owner took pity on her condition and told them the only place he could give them was a stable. There Mary gave birth to Jesus. As soon Lord Jesus was born a big shining star appeared in the sky.
The first ones to get the news about the birth of Jesus were the shepherds. The shepherds were tending their sheep in the planes. Suddenly an angel appeared to them and said "Fear not, For I bring you tidings of great joy. For unto you is born this day in Bethlehem - a Savior who is Christ the Lord."
"And this shall be a sign unto you. You shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger."
Suddenly the sky was filled with angels, praising God and saying, "Glory to God in the Highest, and on Earth peace, good will towards men."
The shepherds followed the star which lead them to the manger. There as told by the angel they saw baby Jesus wrapped in swaddling cloths. They bowed and went away to spread the news of Birth of Jesus, the Savior.
An early historical record indicates that Christmas was celebrated in Rome as a Christian festival as early as AD 336. During the 4th century, many churches elected to celebrate Christmas on December 25, though some adopted January 6 as the day to celebrate Christ's birth.
How Christmas came to be celebrated on the 25th of December remains unclear but is most likely tied to Roman and Germanic pagan traditions that have come to be closely associated with the holiday.
Traditions, such as merrymaking and exchange of gifts, marked this holiday. In addition, on January 1, the Roman New Year, gifts were given to children and the poor; and houses were decorated with greenery and lights.
As civilization spread throughout Western Europe, Christmas traditions expanded to incorporate the winter festival customs of the Germans and Celts, which included celebrations with food and Yule logs and cakes, as well as greenery and fir trees, lights, fires and gifts.
In many countries, gifts are exchanged in the name of Saint Nicholas, or "Santa Claus," the patron saint of family and children.
