Last week Bangalore was rocked by tremors. Of course that rocking lasted only for a couple of seconds. It was a nature's way of telling 'Good Morning, Bangalore!". Well it woke up everyone…it was a sudden wake up call. Yes, it opened up the eyes of the authorities at Bangalore in more than one way.

Bangalore is no more a seismic free zone. Thanks to the numerous activities hampering with nature. These are building multi-storeyed apartments, digging innumerous bore wells, etc. We humans can't even leave underground areas un-tampered. These things would affect the constitution below the surface of the earth. If humans can tamper with nature, nature would show wrath in it's own manner.

Bangalore needs to have a seismic testing division. We do not have a seismic testing division at all as Bangalore was considered a seismic-free region. The government has now decided to set up a division for the purpose.

What does this indicate? Are we going to face more such problems, in the future? What do we do to avoid them? Post your views on the same on the Banging it Out board in Communique. Does this mean we stop the development in the city? Would that take us somewhere?

With the kind of Infrastructure at Bangalore, any such calamity would be at least 10 fold that of Bhuj. And, that is no exaggeration!
But, there were lot more subsequent tremors. These were created by rumor-mongers. People knowing nothing about earthquakes, kept predicting subsequent rumours at 11 AM, 12 PM, 2 PM, 3:30 PM, 8 PM, again 2 AM the next day. Bangalore naturally was restless. Most of the people believing in the rumors were on the streets outside their single-storey houses too.
The commercial areas like M G Road, and others had people abandoning their multi-storeyed offices, and taking to the Roads. Employes of organizations like Apple, Compaq, Intel, Wipro were found on the streets.
Rumor mongers were having a great time building fear in the minds of Bangaloreans, and Bangaloreans, being unassuming that they are, believed in every word that said. Does it have to be this way? How many rumors are actually true? How much should one believe in rumors (if one does)? Is anyone able to reach the root of the problems? Post your views on the Banging it Out board in Communique.
