The
monsoon is here again and Bangalore seems none the ready for it.
Every time it ours here is absolute chaos on the roads. Drains
start to overflow and the streets get flooded very fast. Suddenly
the hapless pedestrian needs a surfboard and a wetsuit to manoeuvre
his way to his destination. The motorist feels like he or she
is riding a motorboat through some pretty choppy waters. As for
the animals, I feel most sorry for them as they are left stranded
and need someone like Noah to build an ark for them and rescue
them from this misery.
Clearly
something is wrong here in this metropolis that is Bangalore.
There has been so much road construction and maintenance but the
roads seem to fall apart after every downpour. Obviously there
needs to be a qualitative improvement in road construction to
ensure that our roads do not disintegrate. The same goes for drainage
systems as well. It is all very well for top ranking officials
to go abroad to see what other civic bodies are doing there.
Apart
from shopping we hope they learn something. When they get back,
however it’s time to implement what they’ve seen and discussed.
Anyway, the fact of the matter is that something has to be done
about it or the problem is just going to get worse. This is not
Mumbai where the sheer ferocity of the monsoon causes considerable
damage. Rains are not that fierce down here and there is no excuse
for unnecessary flooding and overflow of drains. It’s about time
somebody tackles this problem and gives us dry roads to drive
and walk on. Are the authorities as stagnant as the water?
You
know what, I’m sick of going over puddles at moderate speed and
splashing poor scooterists and getting blamed for it. I’m tired
of having to pull of my wet, stinky socks at the end of a long
hard day. I’m highly irritated with the buses that splash everyone
on both sides of the road. I don’t want to fall into an open drain
either folks. So let’s take a stand on this issue and send our
complaints to the BCC in the appropriate areas. Don’t forget to
collect rainwater either as this will drive down your water bill
and help you when there is a water shortage. Let’s respect our
most cherished resource and ensure that it lies where it’s supposed
to lie and not all over the place like it does in Bangalore. When
chaos reigns it really pours doesn’t it?
Your
opinion matters...
